About Galston Gorge
Galston Gorge is the steep, winding section of Galston Road linking Hornsby Heights and Galston in Sydney's north-west. Its tight hairpin bends carry a long-vehicle ban, yet the road is regularly blocked when an overlength truck or caravan attempts the descent and becomes stuck, closing the gorge in both directions — sometimes for hours. It also closes for crashes, landslips after heavy rain, and scheduled night roadworks.
Gorge Open answers one question — is Galston Gorge open right now? — by fusing three independent live traffic sources: the official Transport for NSW hazard feed, TomTom probe speeds measured on the gorge road itself, and Google's traffic-aware routing. When the gorge is closed, the usual detour runs via Old Northern Road and New Line Road through Dural and Cherrybrook.
